Wednesday May 2 2007

Seemed like a good day today. Dr.s Curan and Kiley from Annunciation stopped by yesterday to visit and pray the Rosary for Robin and she was much more settled today. They cleaned her all up and got rid of one of the bags hanging off her. Surgeon said she was healing good. They took her of the BP med. We'll see how that does. She has a button that she can press to administer extra morphine when she needs it. ( They keep changing the pain med). She was awake and aware much of the day. Communicating by using the white board. She asked me if she was going home and I told her eventually. We have a different day nurse, Susan, that we like. Greg said the night nurse was one we had before to so I'm sure she's nice. Ethel bought a guest book to leave in the room. You can sign it and leave a note when you visit if you want. I'll check it for notes. Sometimes people come by and I don't even know it. Sorry if I left anybody out. We have been using the red folder to note any medical stuff (changes in meds, BP, etc).

Robin had a staredown with the nurse today as she obviously wanted to tell her something. After the nurse played the guessing game with her for a while I convinced the nurse to let her have the board to write. Robin clearly indicated that she was thirsty and hungry, hopefully that is another good sign.

Hi Chris. I've been checking the blog every night. Please tell Robin I think of her all day every day. I'll stop by to see her this weekend.

Katelyn and I stopped in to see Robin from 7:30 to almost 9pm tonight. Seemed like there was another problem with the hospital again. The fire department had lights blaring and the water sprinker from the front covered entrance was spraying everywhere? The nurses inside didn't know anything except that it may have been a drill???

Robin was awake and we told her where she was and what time of day it was. She was in a writing mood. So with more ease this time around wrote "I thought were going to the movies". Anybody know anything about this? I thought maybe she meant "move" in regards to moving back to ORMC, but both Katelyn and I believed she meant "movies".

When we first got there, her HR was 100+BMP, but by the time we left she had calmed to a low 80's heart rate.

Nurse Brenda was taking care of Robin when we were there tonight. She was the nurse that was with her when she first had the surgery a week-and-a-half ago. Brenda remembered Chris and something that he had told her about the pain medicine button if Robin made a particular motion with her hand.
Brenda is very nice. She can be put on the "good" list.

....By the way, we updated the red log book with the vitals. Nurse Brenda said that Robin would receive platelets tonight. So pray that her counts go higher! 25k is better, but lets ask for more!

Kathi Thomas - a good friend of Robin's wrote the following report of this morning's events. If you got her email, then skip this one otherwise:

Today was a MUCH better day (from my point of view). First of all, Susan was Robin's nurse. Susan was Robin's nurse before and she is also great! Chris just called to tell me that Susan will be Robin's nurse for tomorrow and Friday!!!!! So no worries there! Robin's surgeon was in first thing and said the Robin's incision looked MUCH BETTER today! Susan turned the blood pressure medicine down to its lowest setting (and Robin's blood pressure remained good the rest of the day). Susan's hope was to wean Robin off the blood pressure medicine today, so that's looking like it might happen. This is another milestone!

Robin was awake from the time I got there at 9:00 a.m. I wanted to be sure to be there in time to 1) make sure Nurse Crachet was not going to be Robin's nurse again today (check that one off!), and 2) meet up with the doctor to be sure that Robin got her pain medicine button so she can get a boost of pain medicine when she wants it. I asked the surgeon
about it right away and he said that he would make it happen. They were changing Robin to morphine today (not quite sure why). So after that Robin signaled several times for
the button. Susan kept going out to check on it and about 11:30 it came to be!!!!!!! (check that one off!). Robin needed help to push it at times, but was much happier after that.

They really gave Robin a workout this morning. The wound nurses were in and changed her biliary bag (Robin had two bags for the billiary collection and Chris and I both thought that "there had to be a better way to do it" especially when the upper bag leaked all the time and was literally a thorn in Robin's side for a long time. So the two wound nurses discussed it and came up with a system (which is almost exactly the design that Chris
and I came up with). I thought it was great, but Robin was getting very agitated when hearing them discuss it. I kept telling Robin that it was a good design but then she wanted me to call Chris and tell him what they were doing. I did and Chris agreed and
said that he trusted Patty the wound nurse. Robin was still worried, but eventually calmed down.

The wound nurses also removed one of the drains from her side (yeah, that is another milestone!). They cleaned Robin all up, and changed her bed and her gown and they took off her leg thingies and washed her legs and then put moisturizer on them and all. I knew this was hard on Robin, but I also knew she would feel much better when they were all done! She was very tired after but looked much more comfortable. After they got her Morphine going she did conk out for a while!

For a head's up, Friday is a day off from school for Seminole County so with that and the
fact that I am in a wedding this weekend, my visits over these three days will be limited.
Jean says she can come early on Friday and stay through early afternoon, so if anyone
else can come for some of the afternoon, that would be great! I have hope that Robin
may be almost back to where she was on last Saturday (before the power outage) by
this weekend, so it might be a good time to visit with her.

So here's hoping that tomorrow is even a better day and Robin meets even more milestones. Oh year, Robin wrote on her board this morning that she wanted to go
home to get a drink (I believe she was referring to something like water). Then later when Chris got there she wrote to him, "Am I going home?" I can't wait till we can tell her "YES" to that!

In case you didn't know... Don't bring flowers to the ICU. Katelyn and I had brought some up, but the nurses said quickly to remove them from the room.

Hi Chris:
Should we donate platelets? It's not as big of a deal, as we thought. Let me know if they are needed so that Greg and I can go donate.

Ethel is with Robin this morning and reported that the current respitory mechanism that helps Robin breath is still being used and probably more than the previous 2/minute setting probably due to the stomach pain (Robin won't be able to breath deeply due to the area of the surgery). Probably the bowel movements are causing the pain - but this is my own personal assessment. Ethel said the doctors are considering a tracheautomy type of procedure to help Robin with the breathing. This type of apparatus will be less annoying to her till she is able to breath without support....
